SAN FRANCISCO -- Brett Favre completed one pass and also got clobbered on a sack that lost Minnesota 10 yards.

Favre's highly anticipated first game back with the Vikings lasted all of four unspectacular plays and one series in a 15-10 loss to the 49ers in a nationally televised preseason game Sunday at Candlestick Park, the only NFL show of the night.

Favre completed a 13-yard pass to Adrian Peterson on his first play from scrimmage but was sacked by Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis two plays later and the Vikings wound up punting. The 40-year-old quarterback took the field just four days after his first training camp practice of the year. He decided to return for a 20th season and make yet another run at a Super Bowl title.

A little thing: what was the deal with a guy getting called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for not getting back inbounds quickly enough? Wasn't that odd? How often does that happen? Why didn't they show a replay?

Alex Smith impressed. The running game still needs to be more creative. The defense looked fantastic.

The Key to the Season™ dropped two passes early but caught a nice one against the Vikings' grocery baggers™.

All in all, I'm as happy as I can be after a meaningless game. No injuries, starters looked good, not bad.

Favre is definitely back and ready to go; Took hits well with that ankle too. Tavaris was looking good with game but Webb was another guy who impressed and is worth the keep on the roster. The Vikings overall were good and they are back to defend their NFC North title although it won't be easy---just ask the Packers.

Alex Smith just came out and looked like a quarterback out there. Loved his game he brought and the presence he gave was Awesome. Ginn was disappointing but had nice game moment with the long pass sent to him. I do fear if he is willing to get in traffic; Big question mark as he's gotta get out of those spots by the sideline and go up the middle; This team is about toughness. Davis the QB had good reads, nice plays completed and shows that he can do the thing if backing up Smith in various game scenarios.

Nice job Cris!! You & NBC Sports did Awesome as usual.

I posted this in the wrong thread because I'm a moron. Re-posting in the proper place.
-------------------

I was really happy with Iupati's performance and I love the coaches' approach to Davis - throw him out there and make him earn it. Overall the 1st team O-Line looked good against one of the better pass rushes in the league. Alex Smith looked like an actual NFL QB tonight and that's encouraging. Loved his pocket presence.

The run game has to be more creative. Everyone on the planet knows Raye will call a run up the gut on 1st down. People in Uzbekistan were telling the Viking's D-Line "middle run!" I'm also disappointed to see the dreaded shotgun appear on 3rd and short again (three times). Finesse teams go shotgun on 3rd and short. There's nothing wrong with that but if Sing wants to establish an identity as a physical football team Raye has to grow a pair on short yardage downs.

I loved the defense. Manusky has really got his guys playing downhill and attacking the ball. Even the 3rd stringers were flying to the ball. It looks like the 49ers have a logjam at LB and someone the 49ers cut will be starting on another team (Travis LaBoy?). Reggie Smith might make people forget Taylor Mays this year.

The Key to the Season™ - he who shall not be named - actually saved himself with an easy catch against the Vikings 3rd string. After dropping two passes when it mattered. I will not forget this.

On the Vikings side: Tavaris' death has been greatly exaggerated. He looked pretty good. And where the heck did that Webb kid come from? He has an arm and some wheels. He may be raw but he's got some serious tools. I was disappointed in Gerheart... I was hoping to see more from him.

Someone please tell me who the Vikings' guard was that Olé'd on Willis? That was a horrible block and I'm thinking he heard about it on the sideline.

After further review, Bolo is right. Peterson whiffed on Willis. Thanks Bolo!

Overall...good game. I posted more in the Niners section.

I think Sing scared that kid so bad that he was determined to catch the ball no matter where it was.

Yeah, no kidding. I didn't watch all of the game, but I did see that catch. I could only look at my wife and grumble, "F'n preseason...". I changed the channel a few seconds later.

The old Bengals/Florida State CB Corey Sawyer once fair caught a punt on the 1, in regular season.

And that is why he is the "old Bengals CB".
