I was going to do this separate of the GM game, so you don't necessarily have to take the same teams.

well since it doesn't seem to matter if there's restrictions on teams you can pick, I'll take the Bengals, with the Colts as my second team.

Still 20 teams left. If anyone wants to change their pick and take their own team, just speak up.

So says the guy who's spot in one of last summer's drafts (all-time worst team, i think) got ceded to someone else because he no-showed for a couple picks. Shut it.

Two rounds is more than enough. After two it's all a crapshoot anyway.

Indeed you did. But gimme credit for remembering that you were involved in that small mess? Apologies.

Still, two rounds is enough. If the draft weenies (Kiper, Mcshay, Mayock, etc.) can't predict even the first round correctly, who are we to presume we could do better?

We usually come up with a date and time to do it, but I don't know how Bengals is looking to do it.

Last year we were supposed to post a short analysis with our pick, but we just didn't have enough time for that. Maybe we could do that this year.

It's not my idea, not my thread, so its not my show.

IMHO we have like 2 months between the combine and the draft. Why not kick it off the day after the combine and not rush it. We have 2 months to finish it before the real deal starts.

If its a fast draft I'm in for the saints. If its going to go slower I'm down to select another team.

As GM of the Raiders, I don't like the idea.

And what's so wrong with doing research for another team? The more you know about other teams, the better. And we're going to need people to double up anyway.

I don't care one way or the other as the gm of the saints. Saints gm for 2 rounds isn't exactly a tough job. We have one late pick in the 2nd. It does affect others, though.

I will say this. If its a 7 round affair I'm totally 100% out. I don't have the time or knowledge to even half ass that. Nor does anyone else here, unless they're an undercover scout for an NFL team. Most NFL teams can't accurately draft guys past the 3rd round. It's too much juxtaposition. They're guys you pick for 2-3 years down the road. They fail with full staffs, who all spend 70+ hrs a week on their craft... Well all except the bengals anyway.. :)

No way its even worth doing with us normal joes making the picks when the pros who do it full time aren't very accurate at it. I'm ok with up to 3 rounds. After that its in depth scouting that begets the true gems. Let's be honest, none of us here have that ability or the staff to make it happen. An in depth draft of former guys is way different. You analyze what they've done, not try to extrapolate their skills floor and ceiling, and make a credible pick based on ability and scheme and said limitations... I'm just sayin...

that's open for discussion. We can either try and do a live draft in the chat if everyone wants to do that. Or, on other sites where I've done them people had 24 hours to make their pick, PM the next person on the list once you make your pick. Usually about 20 hours in if the pick hasn't been made yet, the rest of their group starts naming players for the team to take. If the pick isn't made after 24hours, popular vote makes the pick.

Cris and Andy set up the draft last year where we used the live chat and a separate forum for picks. That was done a little closer to draft day (I believe it was early March), following the combine. It took a few hours. Setting a time may be difficult, especially this early, so perhaps just in the forum is better, but I'm open to either way.

I have to say a couple of things:

1. I am fine with whatever set up is decided. The two-rounder seems the best way to do this, though I am crazy enough to go 7.
2. Also, I may have missed this, but when does everyone want to do this? I may back out if it is before FA signing starts. I think there is too much that happens there, pus it might solve the "Who trades up for RGIII?" debate. I'm starting my baseball research right now, probably won't do much football until the end of the month.
3. I saw a most hilarious mock draft on SB nation just now. Michael Floyd ahead of Blackmon and the Bears picking Mark Barron at SS. The SS thing is not crazy talk, but the pick of a guy with an injury history after the Williams and Carimi debacles is probably not what the new GM is planning.

Floyd over Blackmon isn't that surprising. Floyd's more of a deep threat and is more physical. I'd say he has more upside too.

And guys if we're going to do 2 mocks like last year, does it really matter if it's before or after FA? This could just get everyone ready for the real one.

I think you guys should hold this draft soon. The most fun I had with this site all last year was the first mock draft that Cris, Andy and Phil McConkey kind of spearheaded. That was much later in the game. I still kind of think that was the highlight of the year and could be again this year. If you guys have a sort of "unofficial" mock draft really early, it will be a good base for a more formal one with participation from all the bigwigs on this highly valuable site.

I will take ... no one. I'd just be picking off Kiper's list!

April 1st is perfect for me. And it's the night inbetween the Final Four and the Championship game of March Madness so we'll all be in a sports groove. Should be easy enough to get a good showing.

I agree with Docta. April 1st is too late.

I'm ok either way. I just need a date and time to decide if I can dedicate the correct amount of time to a team other than the saints.

I like April 1st bc it clears out the top tier free agent candidates signings, and makes the team needs more resolute. That allows a bit more than 2 weeks to sign top market fa's and set a "big board" that's factual and applicable, with enough time to set up our own "big boards" to draft guys.

IMHO a draft between the noted 4/1 date and the actual draft would set up better towards what actually happens in the draft. Let the rfas and the fas level the field to needs before adjusting our boards.

Whenever it needs to be done. I'm amenable.

It's an exercise. As accurate as we try to be, we won't be accurate even if it's done the day before the draft. This just gives insight as to team needs, best available, whether or not the two mesh, and if not, the decisions we think will be made. That's all more important than the actual names selected at this point.

Many others have their mock drafts out, I don't see the damage in doing an early mock.
