The Bengals waived undrafted free agent running back Jeff Scott on Wednesday. The day after the team's offseason program came to a close the diminutive back from Ole Miss was let go. There was no corresponding move announced.
This places the Bengals roster at 89, one shy of the maximum 90 players.
Scott, at 5-foot-7, 165 pounds was both the shortest and lightest player on the Bengals roster. He ran for 846 yards and six touchdowns as a junior in the SEC then battled injuries his senior year.
He hoped to enter the league and follow the lead of former Ole Miss multi-purpose back Dexter McCluster (5-8, 170) but finding reps for him in camp would have been a challenge in a crowded running backs room currently manned by Giovani Bernard, Jeremy Hill, Cedric Peerman, Rex Burkhead, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and James Wilder.

Kid never had a chance. As tiny as he is, he might be best suited for for either the CFL or AFL.

I think he could have had a shot, and hopefully he gets a shot somewhere else. He's nearly the same size as Baby Hawk (5'7" 175lbs).

Tavon Austin is 5'9" 174.

Darren Sproles is 5'6", but 190.

Dexter McCluster is 5'8" 170lbs

another one: Trindon Holliday is 5'5 170lbs.

Hopefully someone else gives him a shot. Those guys tend to have skill sets that are few and far between.

I guess I'm a bit surprised this happened so quickly, even as he's a little guy who might not have contributed beyond STs.

Hope he gets a chance to pursue his career somewhere else. Fun kid to watch.

I think that's why the media wondered if a corresponding move was coming. No other reason to do it now.

You would think they would've waived a different player first though. I was thinking maybe Scott might not have been impressive enough in OTAs, but you would think he would be especially dazzling in no-pad practices. It's usually the big physical guys that don't stand out during the no-contact phase. Maybe it was a health or attitude type issue instead? I dunno.
