• Happy 4th Of July!

This is a special day, so please indulge me on being "off topic" this one time.

It's been about a year since Cris invited me to share my thoughts with you regarding the NFL, from the perspective of a former role player and special teams guy. I knew I would learn a lot from the other contributers, but I have been blown away by the level of intelligence and civility of all the members and guests of this site. Thank you.

On this Independence Day, I would also like to give thanks to all of our warriors around the world. These brave men and women are the best in the world. I never thought a generation could be a great as the World War II generation, but I was wrong.

Since I've gone way "off topic", I may as well go further.

I have always looked to others for inspiration. The stories of what man can overcome never ceases to amaze me. Many of these stories have helped me achieve my dreams, and continue to do so.

The latest story of perseverance that I found, may be the greatest. "Unbroken", by Laura Hillenbrand, is a life changing read that I strongly recommend. Since I finished the book three weeks ago, I have not complained, become angry, or have had a negative thought.

Enjoy the day everyone, and thank you Louie Zamperini!

Thanks for the heads up about "Unbroken" I will be sure to check it out. Phil, as I vacation on Hilton Head Island with family on the 4th of July I would like to thank you for your service in the Naval Academy. Your dedication is one of the reasons we are able to enjoy the freedom and privileges we do. Thanks for your football insight as well.

You are the man Phil, and you can be off topic any time you choose. Isn't one of the great things about this site the fact that we can be real with each other, and that off topic has a tendency to be just as on topic as anything? Tales of perseverance and inspiration are never off topic in my book. Thanks for the classy thoughts to help us keep Independence Day in perspective.

I've not read Unbroken, but my husband read it and I have never seen him so impressed with a book. He's an avid reader of WWII history, so I trust his opinion on this. It's on my list as well.

I'm a little late to this conversation - but just wanted to add..

I still think one of the most memorable events in all of pro football for me personally was watching Lt. McConkey stop his super bowl celebration and pick up a weapon on the ground of the field!!

Unbroken is a great book. I recently read, "The Heart and the Fist" by Eric Greitens. Biography of an Oxford university rhodes scholar humanitarian become U.S. Navy Seal. Not the average human being, but great message.

Strenght and compassion balancing each other. Definitely something that needs to be remembered by all Americans on independence day.

Eric Greitens is a unique human being, as are most SEALs. I will be visiting the base in Coronado on Wed to see some friends. It's always an inspiring experience being around those great warriors and Americans. I am in awe of them.

For those that missed it the first time around, or just want to watch it again, here's the mini-documentary on Phil from the always great NFL Films, including his military service and finding the gun at the Super Bowl.

Brady was throwing at the knees or over the heads of guys. He doesn't seem to be trusting himself, putting too much sauce on those throws and loosing control.

I still wouldn't bench him. Go to last post

I see nothing that makes me not recognize Newton as a singular talent. Does he have Luck's vision, no. But he is a much better passer than Kaepernick at this point, and he doesn't it with a worse... Go to last post

Agreed. Miami number 2 by talent unless the Jets replace Smith with Vick. New England's defense is looking shabbier than its WR group.
