• Redskins Have a QB But Not a RB

Redskins' coach Mike Shanahan has admitted that he doesn't know who the Skins' starting RB will be this year.

"You guys kind of tease me a little bit, saying that I won't say. I don't know. I don't know who's going to be the tailback. I do know that I have three guys I have a lot of confidence in that played last year.... We'll find out."
The Redskins top 3 rushers from last year, Roy Helu, Tim Hightower and Evan Royster, are all back. But considering that they finished 25th in the league with 100.9 rushing yards/game, I'm not sure why that inspires so much confidence in Shanahan.

If they do have reason for optimism, it might be 2nd year man Evan Royster. Royster, the team's 6th round pick last year, spent the first 11 weeks of the season on the practice squad, but when he got promoted to the active roster he made the most of the opportunity. He finished 3rd on the team with 328 rushing yards, all but 3 of those yards coming in the final 4 games, racked up an impressive 5.9 yards/carry and ran for 100+ yards in each of the final 2 games.

With the addition of 2nd overall pick Robert Griffin, the Redskins will be a quarterback driven team. Aside from a strong arm, Griffin has sprinters speed. I would be surprised if he isn't the team's 2nd leading rusher by the end of the year. The deciding factor on who gets the bulk of the playing time at RB may not be the ability to carry the ball, but the ability to pass block for the new franchise QB.

As a fan, I'm not worried about who carries the ball. All three candidates have shown something. I'm concerned about the health of the line. If the line can stay together, the running yards will come. It's the system.

Expect an increase in RB production due to RGIII's presence. As Shady McCoy was the latest to demonstrate, elusive QBs open up lanes for their RBs because of the attention they draw. A safety or lB having to spy the QB is one guy less in the tackle box.

When they brought in Clinton Portis back a while ago, I'd think his tenure would have been more fruitful than it was. Know what's funny? Portis was also with the Broncos and helped them succeed with Shanahan during the Jake "The Snake" Plummer era. I sense the Redskins will have the position fully intact within the coming years. I got this feeling that Tim Hightower is still one of their best options.

Evan Royster will make RG3's life so much easier. Shanny has a knack for getting production out of RB's. Evan was a solid player at PSU and he did well at the end of the season for Shanny off the bench. I expect him to be the guy this year.

In retrospect, I guess they did have a RB.

I wonder if he'd be as successful of another team? I still believe the system makes good backs great. What I love about Morris is his fight. Also, he makes good decisions.

no question that he's a system player to at least some degree. but he's obviously very good in that system. Like you said, he works hard and he's also a great kid. I would compare him to Victor Cruz personalty-wise, a guy who really appreciates where he is. Shanahan will probably run him to death and he'll be out of the league in 3-4 years, but he'll be a star for 2-3 of those years, which is more than he'd get anywhere else.

      Thanks, that sounds exactly right.
