Santonio Holmes has been in the background just a bit during Jets camp so far, but he still has been one of the side acts in a smaller performance ring. While the Jets quarterback situation has taken over the big ring at the circus so much that even the President of the United States has weighed in on the situation, don't think that Holmes has not tried his best to garner some of the headlines.
First, the mercurial Jets receiver out of Ohio State was told to basically keep his mouth shut by Rex Ryan. Ryan, of course, had no problem with publicly zinging Holmes by saying that he was not paid to be the offensive coordinator of the Jets.
Then, Santonio missed time for 3-4 practices because of undisclosed reasons.
After being told to be quiet, a defiant Holmes complained to the media that he was a scapegoat last season.. A a day or two after that, Holmes was seen on the camp sidelines in a conversation with Keyshawn Johnson, former author of a book called "Just Give Me the Damn Ball!"
Last night, Johns...uh, Holmes left the scrimmage with a rib injury. It was first reported that the injury may be a broken rib, but x-rays were negative.
While Tim Tebow is supposed to the play-maker whenever he is in the game, Holmes is supposed to be that guy for the Jets on every other offensive play that the receiver is on the field. I'm not saying the talented receiver is completely lost, but since the Steelers decided they had to break up with him, Holmes may want to realize that he is being told to be quiet by two of the biggest mouths of the last 15 years.
