  • Preseason week #2: Substance @ Style (err...Giants @ Jets)

The rock-steady New York Giants will "visit" the mercurial New York Jets tonight in the {most anticipated preseason matchup of all-time}. <---For the uninitiated, those are the Official FP Sarcasm Brackets.

Still, hype aside, there are few things of interest in this one:

    Giants:
    • The left tackle position: Starter Wil Beatty is out again with back problems. Is David Diehl the answer? Look for him to gt a look there along with Sean Locklear, and James Brewer. Eli Manning is as good at slipping rushers as anyone, but henneds to have an anchor point. It would be good if that point were on his blind side.
    • Prince Amukamara: Terrell Thomas is out with a knee injury so Prince is getting his chance to shine. He should be able to lock down the Jets' depleted WR corps. Will he?
    • Will DJ Ware or David Wilson stake a claim for the #2 running back's job?
    • Mark Herzlich vs. Chase Blackburn at MLB
    • After Cruz & Nicks, who does Eli seem to trust between Randle, Hixon, Barden, Jernigan, and Bennett?

    Tebows Jets:
    • Can the offensive line protect Tebow {dangit!} Sanchez? They were terribad last week.
    • The soon-to-be-revolving-door at WR: Too much noise and too little production has the Jesters eyeing a veteran free agent WR. Stepehen Hill, Patrick Tebow Turner {dammit who gave that Bayless guy my password?!?} will have to start showing up or Rexy & the boys may bring that Tebow Plaxico guy back...
    • Quinton Coples looked great against the Bengals backups last week. Word is he has been working in practice against Tebow {noooooooo!!} while taking motivational classes from Tebow Lou Holtz. Wait. What?

    OK, daggonnit. I give. {Nothing to see here but TEBOW!!!}

New offensive co-o, same old popgun Jets offense. No push on running plays, not a lot of protection for the QB. Gonna be a long season if they can't get better play from the line.

Someone should make a list of teams with o-line issues. I'm thinking Redskins, Falcons, Jets, Dolphins, Vikings. Who else?

26-3? yikes. Jets have 9 points in 2 preseason games.

Giants looked steady tonight. Run game still needs work. Their offensive line got no push. It's really hard to figure out Big Blue's RB situation when the line leaves all their backs to get stuffed at the line. David Wilson did show some burst and wiggle on one run and looked steady in the pass game. The Jets defense was pretty vanilla, but Wilson did not look outmatched as a blocker.

Eli was solid but he did zero in on Victor Cruz a bit. The Gmen are no closer to finding out who their #3 WR is going to be.

Giants d-line is going to be okay despite all the injuries, I think.

Jayron Hosely dinged Mark Sanchez for a 77-yard pick six but was seen in a walking boot after the game. No word yet on his injury.

Jets did not look sharp at all, especially on offense. As Docta wrote in chat last night:

Ground & Pound - Pound = Not Good. The running game looked anemic.

The Jets could not gather any steam in the running game, Sanchez looked anywhere from pedestrian to dreadful when he gave up a 77yd pick 6 and Tim Tebow did not look any better.

Rex Ryan was heard speaking of "self-inflicted wounds" at halftime. He was probably taking a back-handed swipe at Wyane Hunter who gave up four sacks in the game.

Can't run, can't pass, can't protect the QB = can't score TDs. And what do you know? The Jets are the only team without a TD this preseason.

The Jets defense looked solid against the run, fair against the pass as they gave up four FGs and one offensive TD.

is it me, or is EVERYONE'S running game struggling? Maybe its just because everyone is vanilla this time of year, but I can't recall watching any good rushing in the preseason.

LOL! Whoa; that locker scene is real epic & proof that the NY media scene is poppin'! Guess what? Andy's production session notes will next be from-----a Jets game on SNF! LOL! We can't stop TebowMania; We can only hope to contain it. This era is unparallel to anything in the NFL before. Now that Tebow has a track record in the NFL, it will be interesting to see how fans react to wanting the back-up QB if Sanchez fails. That's worth a movie!

After watching that game, I begin to despair of Mark Sanchez getting over the hump. He's really indecisive. He has poor pocket awareness. Bad combination, especially with a terrible o-line. It means he gets sacked a lot. Maybe it's the new offense, although to my untrained eye it seems just as primitive as the old offense. And he seems reluctant to throw anything deep or semi-deep. Could be a long season for Jets fans, which I know will please many (most?) here.

Jets defense might be decent, though.
