  • Fact or Fiction: 2012

You all know this drill by now. I'll make twenty hypothetical statements about the upcoming NFL season, you tell all of FP if you believe each to be fact or fiction.

    1. The Green Bay Packers will again challenge for a perfect season
    2. Russell Wilson will still be the Seahawks starter in week #10
    3. The New York Jets will make the playoffs

    6. The Denver Broncos will easily win the AFCW

    8. The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense will show its age and the Steelers will go no better than 9-7
    9. The NFCN will produce three playoff teams
    10. We've see the end of Adrian Peterson and Stephen Jackson as top-shelf running backs
    11. KC Chiefs' DT Dontari Poe will be a key contributor in 2012
    12. The Chargers defense will push them into the playoffs
    13. Chargers LB/DE Melvin Ingram will be Defensive Rookie of the Year

      2. Big Miss. Russell Wilson will still be the Seahawks starter in week #10. Crap. I can see him developing into an above average player, not a rookie super star.
      3. Correct. The New York Jets will make the playoffs. Crap. Too much inner turmoil, too little offense.
      4. Correct. The Patriots' TEs will struggle to repeat last year's successes. Fact. They'll be the best pair of TEs in the league by far. repeating last year is too much to ask
      5. Miss. The New Orleans Saints will fall apart under the pressure and will miss the playoffs. Crap. Saints win at least 10 with a chip on their shoulder.
      6. Miss. The Denver Broncos will easily win the AFCW. Crap. They are the great unknown. could win 14 or lose 14. I don't see them easily winning the division
      7. Correct. The San Francisco 49ers will regress, miss playoffs. Fact/Crap. They will regress. Not win the NFC worst? no way.
      8. Miss. The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense will show its age and the Steelers will go no better than 9-7. Crap. Hood, Heyward. Steelers epitomize 'next man up'
      9. Correct. The NFCN will produce three playoff teams. Crap. 3 playoff caliber teams, but tough for all 3 to get in.
      10. Correct. We've see the end of Adrian Peterson and Stephen Jackson as top-shelf running backs. Crap. Peterson might have an off year, but he's still a stud.
      11. Correct. KC Chiefs' DT Dontari Poe will be a key contributor in 2012. Crap. He's a space filler.
      12. Miss. The Chargers defense will push them into the playoffs. Fact, at least the playoff part. Chargers are still a talented team, need to stop under achieving
      13. Correct. Chargers LB/DE Melvin Ingram will be Defensive Rookie of the Year. Crap, always take the field.
      14. Half Credit. The Houston Texans will struggle to make the playoffs when Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson again prove they can't play a full season. Crap/fact. I wouldn't be surprised if both Johnson and Schaub are gone by week 17, would be surprised if Texans don't win the AFCS.
      15. TBD. 2012 will be Mike Wallace's last season in Pittsburgh. Crap. They'll work something out or he'll hold out again. he isn't going anywhere.
      16. Technically correct. The Miami Dolphins will win less than 3 games in 2012. Crap. i see 3-5
      17. Miss. The Jacksonville Jaguars will win more than 3 games in 2012. Crap. i see 3-5 (gonna be a tough year in florida).
      18. Correct. Luke Kuechly will not lead the Carolina Panthers in total tackles. Crap. He's a tackling machine, defense is built around him making tackles.
      19. Correctish. Julio Jones will not have his much ballyhooed breakout season. Fact. He'll be a dominant player, but too many weapons to get 90-100 catches.
      20. Miss, probably. RGIII will win Offensive Rookie of the Year. Crap. Always take the field.
      11.5 right. 7.5 wrong.

Correct 3 The New York Jets will make the playoffs CRAP hahahaha .. maybe if McElroy starts

Wrongish 4 The Patriots' TEs will struggle to repeat last year's successes CRAP Hernandez makes up for any Gronkowski dropoff (they have 4 TEs now)

Correct 5 The New Orleans Saints will fall apart under the pressure and will miss the playoffs FACT Atlanta bumps them back into the pack

Wrongo 6 The Denver Broncos will easily win the AFC CRAP Just not seeing anyone as dominant in the AFCW

Correct 7 The San Francisco 49ers will regress, miss playoffs CRAPish Regress? Yes, but make the playoffs

Wrongo 8 The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense will show its age and the Steelers will go no better than 9-7 CRAPish ^^

Correct 9 The NFCN will produce three playoff teams CRAP Some team, be it Packers, Lions or Bears is going to be unhappy.

Correct 10 We've see the end of Adrian Peterson and Stephen Jackson as top-shelf running backs CRAP Such a difficult call, could easily happen but AP will be back at some point

Correct 11 KC Chiefs' DT Dontari Poe will be a key contributor in 2012 CRAP They're now asking Poe to do more... yeesh

Wrongo 12 The Chargers defense will push them into the playoffs CRAP The offense will

Wrongo 13 Chargers LB/DE Melvin Ingram will be Defensive Rookie of the Year CRAP But he looks like he'll be pretty darned good

Correct 14 The Houston Texans will struggle to make the playoffs when Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson again prove they can't play a full season CRAP The changes may well come back to bite them but the division is awful

Who knows... 15 2012 will be Mike Wallace's last season in Pittsburgh FACT Gone

Correct 16 The Miami Dolphins will win less than 3 games in 2012 CRAP But it's close

Wrongo 17 The Jacksonville Jaguars will win more than 3 games in 2012 FACT 4 games is nothing to write home about

Wrongo 18 Luke Kuechly will not lead the Carolina Panthers in total tackles FACT I do think Kuechly's going to be in the hunt

Correct 19 Julio Jones will not have his much ballyhooed breakout season FACT He'll be better, but not amazingly so

Wrongo 20 RGIII will win Offensive Rookie of the Year CRAP Does Bob Griffin have a contract plugging armor yet? He will
      Batting .500ish.

Correct though I wasn't enthused 2. Russell Wilson will still be the Seahawks starter in week #10. Fact-It's a toss-up.
Correct 3. The New York Jets will make the playoffs. Crap-I can't see how this could possibly happen.
Sort of since injuries limited Gronk 4. The Patriots' TEs will struggle to repeat last year's successes. Crap-They will be solid again. I predict a big year for Hernandez.
Wrong 5. The New Orleans Saints will fall apart under the pressure and will miss the playoffs Crap-I think they'll have a few bumps, but will still make the playoffs.
Correct thought it was easier than I thought 6. The Denver Broncos will easily win the AFCW. Crap-They might, but it won't be "easily".
Correct 7. The San Francisco 49ers will regress, miss playoffs Crap-In an ugly NFCW, their D keeps them at the top.
Wrong 8. The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense will show its age and the Steelers will go no better than 9-7. Crap-I've got them at 10-6.
Correct 9. The NFCN will produce three playoff teams. Crap-One will miss.
Correct 10. We've see the end of Adrian Peterson and Stephen Jackson as top-shelf running backs. Crap-They're still quality guys.
Correct 11. KC Chiefs' DT Dontari Poe will be a key contributor in 2012 Crap-He will play, but I wouldn't say "key".
Correct 12. The Chargers defense will push them into the playoffs Crap-Next year.
Correct 13. Chargers LB/DE Melvin Ingram will be Defensive Rookie of the Year Crap-But he will be in the race for it.
Correct 14. The Houston Texans will struggle to make the playoffs when Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson again prove they can't play a full season. Crap-I've got them to the AFCCG
Widely believed to be correct, but TBD 15. 2012 will be Mike Wallace's last season in Pittsburgh Fact-Can't see them finding the money for him.
Correct 16. The Miami Dolphins will win less than 3 games in 2012 Crap-I've got 5.
Wrong 17. The Jacksonville Jaguars will win more than 3 games in 2012. Fact-I'll say 5 also.
Wrong 18. Luke Kuechly will not lead the Carolina Panthers in total tackles Fact-But he will make a bunch.
Correct IMO 19. Julio Jones will not have his much ballyhooed breakout season Crap-Depends on what you consider a breakout season, but he'll have a very good year.
Wrong 20. RGIII will win Offensive Rookie of the Year. Crap-That's Luck's to lose.
I'm calling 14-5-1. It depends on how you define the Pats TEs this year. One of those Greens turn Red if Wallace winds up back in Pittsburgh and vice versa if RGIII somehow doesn't win ROY.

      2. Russell Wilson will still be the Seahawks starter in week #10- FACT He'll be benched by week 4, but put back in when Flynn gets hurt, or Sea realizes he's worse.

      3. The New York Jets will make the playoffs- CRAP *Bonus* Rex Ryan doesn't survive the season.

      4. The Patriots' TEs will struggle to repeat last year's successes- CRAP They may not put up quite the numbers, but they'll still be very good. Except that Aaron Hernandez will have the bigger numbers of the 2.

      5. The New Orleans Saints will fall apart under the pressure and will miss the playoffs- FACT to not making playoffs. I don't think they'll fall apart, and tt won't be because of the pressure. It will be because their defense isn't any good. 9-10 wins, but out.

      6. The Denver Broncos will easily win the AFCW- CRAP Denver finishes in last place.

      7. The San Francisco 49ers will regress, miss playoffs- CRAP Well-coached, fundamentally sound team with a 2012 Pro Bowl QB. 12 wins for SF.

      8. The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense will show its age and the Steelers will go no better than 9-7- CRAP C'mon man! 13-3. This will be Big Ben's finest season.

      9. The NFCN will produce three playoff teams- CRAP

      10. We've see the end of Adrian Peterson and Stephen Jackson as top-shelf running backs- CRAP SJax is in for one last good-great season, and AP still has a number of years left, including this year, even if the media writes him off after September.

      11. KC Chiefs' DT Dontari Poe will be a key contributor in 2012- I'll say FACT, but his impact likely won't be felt until November at the earliest.

      12. The Chargers defense will push them into the playoffs- CRAP The Chargers are yesterday's news.

      13. Chargers LB/DE Melvin Ingram will be Defensive Rookie of the Year- Two Chargers topics? CRAP He'll be good, but not as impactful as Morris Claiborne, Luke Kuechly, or *gulp* Bruce Irvin.

      14. The Houston Texans will struggle to make the playoffs when Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson again prove they can't play a full season CRAP It won't be a walk in the park, since Indy and Tennessee will both be better than people think, but they're the best team. And I'll say Johnson/Schaub miss no more than 2 games combined.

      15. 2012 will be Mike Wallace's last season in Pittsburgh FACT He's Attachment 839

      16. The Miami Dolphins will win less than 3 games in 2012 CRAP 6 wins for Miami this year. Reggie Bush is in for his best season by far.

      17. The Jacksonville Jaguars will win more than 3 games in 2012 FACT The Jags are never quite as bad as I think they'll be.

      18. Luke Kuechly will not lead the Carolina Panthers in total tackles- CRAP

      19. Julio Jones will not have his much ballyhooed breakout season- CRAP Just matching his per game numbers from last year would give him nearly 1300 yards and 12 TDs. Julio Jones will be the 2nd best WR in the NFL this season.

      20. RGIII will win Offensive Rookie of the Year- FACT I feel like these last 2 were put on here just for me. RGIII will throw for 3700 yards, run for 500, and total 29 TDs.

*BONUS*- Matt Ryan will win the MVP- CRAP It will be Big Ben. But Ryan finishes 2nd, wins NFC Offensive POY, and leads Atlanta to the NFC Championship game. Many have written him off as a "we know who he is" guy, but he's only 27. There's a leap coming this year.
My comments may have been a tad bit off on some of these, but it looks like I hit on about 16/20. Other than 6, 8, 11, and 17, it's looking pretty good. Even my bonus prediction of Matt Ryan's breakout went well, and if Ben had avoided a freak injury, I very well may have been close on that call as well.

I'm particularly proud of 3 (I was closer than many thought on my bold Rex Ryan prediction), 10, 14, and 18-20 (even if my yardage numbers for Griffin were slightly off).

*EDIT* Sorry. So far it's 14-4-2. Still waiting on 15. and 20.
