• Osweiler to be #2 QB, Broncos Cut Hanie

Caleb Hanie's inability to win the job as Peyton Manning's backup just cost him $1 million. Hanie has been released in a salary cap move by the team. Brock Osweiler has been named the Broncos' number two quarterback.

Mike Klis of the Denver Post: In a move to help maintain budget flexibility for later in the season, the Broncos released backup quarterback Caleb Hanie on Saturday. He was replaced on the 53-man roster by defensive tackle Sealver Siliga who was promoted from the practice squad.

Hanie was released so his $1 million base salary would not be guaranteed. The Broncos also avoided paying him a $250,000 bonus for making the active game day roster. Don’t be surprised if Hanie is re-signed by the Broncos on Tuesday.
Sounds like the Broncos don't think another team will swoop in and grab the former Colorado State star.

Sounds like they aren't very impressed with him. I'm sure they'll re-sign him next week, this was just done to avoid guaranteeing his salary for the season. If they thought he was a capable #2 they wouldn't be worried about that. They're keeping their options open to replace him later in the year.

If they were going to bring him back wouldn't they have just left a spot open instead of promoting from the PS when they only need 46 tomorrow?

Whomever they cut next week is going to have to churn through waivers to get back to the PS (should that be the plan).

Any team could sign him off the practice squad anyway.

"Broncos cut Hanie" is the least surprising headline since "Kim Kardashian Bangs an NBA Player".

One thing John Elway MUST do is learn from Bill Polian's mistake of not having an effective back-up for Manning. He's got to ensure that the right guy knows how to run that team especially with a QB, in his late 30's, with multiple neck surgeries and because of Any Given Sunday. You Never Know what'll happen. Polian did work in IND but not getting the right QB back-up was key in his Colts exit.
