• Eagles Fire DC Juan Castillo

The Eagles have fired defensive coordinator Juan Castillo. Castillo has been on the hot seat almost from the day he took over for Sean McDermott, moving over from offensive line coach.

The Eagles have the 12th ranked defense this year after finishing 8th last year. While those certainly aren't numbers that would normally lead to a mid-season firing, with the exception of Jason Babin the Eagles' star studded defense has never really lived up to expectations under Castillo. Of course the same can be said of the entire Eagles' team the last year and a half and it's entirely possible that Castillo is the first domino to fall on the Eagles' coaching staff, but not the last.

Don't be surprised if Marty Mornhinweg gets stripped of the play-calling duties. Andy needs to call the plays like he did for the first 7 seasons. Because Andy's job lives and dies with this season. May as well control his own destiny and call the plays.

He never should have been named DC in the first place. It's not like the offense was giving him any help either, with all of those turnovers.

I've never met Todd Bowles, but he's supposed to be a very bright guy. A quick look at his resume shows that he's been a DB coach for several teams since 2000, but has never been a DC. He has however been a HC, taking over the Dolphins at the end of last year after Tony Sparano was fired.

I don't have a problem with any coach getting an opportunity in a new role. Juan didn't really do a terrible job overall. Let's look at some numbers.

Eagles points allowed in the first 12 games with Castillo as DC: 21.8
Eagles points allowed in the last nine games with Castillo as DC: 14.5

Eagles opponents third down conversion rate in the first 12 games with Castillo as DC: 37%
Eagles opponents third down conversion rate in the last nine games with Castillo as DC: 29%

Eagles opponents red zone conversion rate in the first 12 games with Castillo as DC: 70%
Eagles opponents red zone conversion rate in the last nine games with Castillo as DC: 31%

Eagles points allowed in the fourth quarter the first 12 games with Castillo as DC: 7.9
Eagles points allowed in the fourth quarter in the last nine games with Castillo as DC: 5.3

Like you said Docta, he wasn't getting much help from the offense. Hell the special teams don't help out by giving the opposition a short field. In the coming week, I expect changes in the Offense and ST.

Exactly, and all of that falls back on Reid, who decided he'd rather have Howard Mudd run the O-Line than a real defensive coordinator. Heck, considering the Eagles OL issues when Castillo was in charge, perhaps he should have just fired him anyway. But to move him to DC was a joke. I get that some coaches can just coach, and many start on one side of the ball, then end up on the other, but to jump straight from OL to DC? Move him to the DL, or something. Give him some experience before moving him up to the 2nd most important position on his coaching staff.

But I supposed Reid deserves more than to be fired midseason. Plus, the Eagles front office likely still has delusions of playoff glory with this team. But I think it's pretty clear that this is the first step toward the Eagles finally ridding themselves of Craig Stadler once the season comes to an end. I'm not even sure anything less than a Super Bowl saves Reid at this point.

I really don't see how it's a delusion when they are only 3-3 and there are 10 games left. Your Steelers team is 2-3 and doesn't very good at all, but is the front office delusional if they think they can turn it around and make the playoffs? C'mon man. Until a team is eliminated from post season officially you don't stop playing to win it all.

With the mustaches on the front page today, we really need something sports related to happen to Tom Selleck.

Aye, I don't like Andy's stache. He looks like the Dr. Seuss character, Lorax.

I wouldn't expect either to expect anything different at this point. It's a long season. But as currently constructed, neither Philadelphia nor Pittsburgh are going anywhere this year unless some drastic changes take place.

With Pittsburgh, it's mainly a health issue, specifically involving Troy Polamalu, whom Pittsburgh has done a poor job of insuring considering their lack of quality depth behind him.

With Philly, I think it's more of a cultural issue. Maybe this gives the team a jolt, and kicks Andy Reid in the pants. I just don't see it.

Steelers may have health problems, mostly the Glass Joe O-line but there are more issues than hurting. Troy is not the same player he was 2 years ago. He is just an average defender making elite money that isn't an impact player anymore. As a whole, the defense is slow and they get pushed around at the line and can't stop the run. Taylor can't cover without using his hands and Colon is a holding machine. Harrison in man coverage on a WR? Yeah that worked out well.

The bad play and bad play call extends to the Steelers' coaches. They are in the same boat as the eagles, it's a cultural issue as well. If the Steelers fall to the Bengals, I wonder what the fallout will be.

Even if Reid gets fired, he'll get re-hired by another team the minute after. He's been with the Eagles for 14 years though, so they might just let him resign. Having to deal with McNabb, TO, and Vick over the years has to be stressful. He might even want to take a yearlong break.
