  • Bell Tolls for Maybin

High-pick busts usually get more than one shot before their time in the league is over. The tradition continued today when the Jets released former Buffalo Bill Aaron Maybin. The Jets needed a running back with injuries to Joe McKnight and Bilal Powell. They signed former Chicago Bear Khalil Bell, who opened his NFL career with a 72 yard run against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Maybin missed all of Bills training camp in 2009. He did sign a deal worth about $25 million with $15 million guaranteed. Maybin was ineffective from the start. He never registered a sack with the Buffalo Bills in 2009 and in 2010. He finished with 14 tackles in upstate New York. Last year Maybin traveled south to play for the Jets. He was actually decent in 2011, notching six sacks.

This season, though, seemed to be proof that 2011 was not a year that showed promise but was more like the chemistry test that one dumb jock got an 85% on because the teacher didn't realize that he or she made 85% of the answers "c." Not only did Maybin not record a sack this season, he has been credited with one tackle, according to pro football reference. Finally, he played terrible and earned some headlines by mentioning that the Jets would be interested in legally knocking Reggie Bush out of their game against him.

That Bush headline is not the type that teams want to see as the results from Bountygate are still unknown. Now, his final headline will be the one that many expected after that first summer in Buffalo.

Also today, the Falcons dumped their big free agent from two seasons ago, Ray Edwards. A complete non-factor, and they're whisper bad-mouthing him on the way out, saying he acted like he didn't care.

I will say this - Maybin leaves the league theoretically at least $15 million wealthier than when he arrived. Better living through chemistry indeed.

That still makes me angry, which tells you more about me than about him, I guess. But not about the people who overlooked this thing that EVERYBODY I know who pays attention was, shall we say, skeptical about before that draft.

First 6 DEs taken in '09: Tyson Jackson, Maybin, Brian Orakpo, Larry English, Robert Ayers, Everette Brown. Aside from the Geico spokesman, that's a really weak group.

I know nothing about the PED rumors, but he was listed at 240 and ran a 4.9 at the combine, not a combination that typically leads to success in the NFL.

The trick is he played around 215 that year. The insta-muscles and the surprisingly good 40 times went hand in hand to make the amateurs who were hoping to find a good pass rusher raise an eyebrow or two. An OLB in name only, you're right, 240 is unlikely to breed success.

My hope is that they were looking at Aaron Schobel, who started his career at 265 and ended it at 245 and were stupidly thinking that weight could succeed. Of course he was a better all-around athlete, had the frame for it, had great instincts, and wasn't, you know, an idiot.

4.9 is not a good 40 time for that weight. When I looked up his numbers I was expecting something in the range of 4.5. Off the top of my head, I believe Orakpo was around 265-270 and ran a 4.6. And was drafted 2 picks after Maybin. As you've said, just a huge failure in scouting by the Bills.
