• Black Monday 2012

It's basically cut-down day for NFL front offices. Today, I will keep updating this page with links to the latest firing news throughout this depressing day.

-First is the New York Jets, who fired GM Mike Tannenbaum. The news is not much of surprise, but the current decision to keep Rex Ryan is getting mixed reviews. The Jets have had difficulty rebuilding their defensive line and their offense had no depth at wide receiver before injuries wiped out a good portion of players from camp.

-The Philadelphia Eagles were next. Another disappointing year for a talented team may lead to the dismissal of Andy Reid. It may not be official yet, but all signs point to the end of 14 years as Eagles coach. He won 7 division titles in his time. UPDATE: Eight minutes after this post.....Reid fired.

-Gene Smith is out in Jacksonville. Reports on Sunday had the head coach in limbo as well. The Jags have what many consider the least-talented roster in the league. There are developing players in each side of the ball, but not enough to make up for 7 wins in two seasons.

-Romeo Crennel will take his 28-55 career record to the unemployment line , ending a season of bad play and heart-breaking news. The surprise so far is that Scott Pioli is supposed to keep his position. Perhaps all that spy equipment he put up in the offices has paid off.

-The Browns are starting over again. Early reports are stating Cleveland interest in names such as Bruce Arians, Jon Gruden and Chip Kelly.

-The Norv Turner Show has been cancelled. GM A.J. Smith is supposed to be out as well. The Chargers, once one of the most talented in the league, have seen talent leave or retire with no real replacements coming forward. In six years as Chargers coach, his high water mark was a 13-3 season in 2009. Since then, the team fell to nine wins in 2010 and then lost another win each season after that.

-UPDATE: 10:47am- Ian Rappaport of the NFLN has tweeted that Lovie Smith is out in Chicago. Adam Shefter tweeted that Bears have asked to speak with coaches. News happened during the Jay Cutler Show on ESPN 1000 in Chicago. That made for some great radio.

-UPDATE: 10:57am- NFLN now reporting that Chan Gailey is out in Buffalo. Our friends at Pro Football Talk now help this Black Monday tie a record. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...e-chan-gailey/ Gailey finished with a 16-32 record in three years in Buffalo.

-UPDATE: 1:19pm- The meeting with Ken Whisenhunt went long in Arizona. Rod Graves is the one who is out. Graves had been with the team since 1997 and been GM since 2002. Whoops. Reports now say that Whisenhunt is out as well.

    -LAST UPDATE: 1:19pm EST

Jeffrey Lurie fired Reid this morning. He will give a presser at noon eastern.

"Andy Reid won the most games of any head coach in Eagles history and he is someone I respect greatly and will remain friends with for many years to come,” said Lurie. "But, it is time for the Eagles to move in a new direction. Coach Reid leaves us with a winning tradition that we can build upon. And we are very excited about the future.”

"The search for the new coach of the Philadelphia Eagles will begin immediately," said Lurie.

-Pioli keeping his job is a real kick in the crotch to that fan base. IMO.

Jay Cutler has cut his radio show short due to news at Halas Hall. Lovie Smith is done in Chicago. Finishes with 81-63 regular season record and 3-3 in three playoff appearances for a total 84-66 record.

Someone on my facebook feed just announced that Chan has been fired. Does this count?

Also, while I had high hopes for hm, his Wannstedting made this OK by me.

I think the Bills are going to go after Gruden hard.

Pioli is still here in KC. But that isn't absolute.

Rivera seems safe in Carolina. Cardinals news is unknown right now. Surprisingly, Munchak seems safe.

      Jets have changed presser time.

Browns appear to be hiring a coach first, who they think will have an expanded role in personnel decisions, then will find a GM. Sounds like Banner will have final say on the roster.
    1. mkocs6's Avatar
Banner also indicates that he does not believe a complete overhaul of the roster is necessary. Phew.

The rush is mostly over, but Twitter is reporting that Ken Whisenhunt is still in his meeting with management.

Yikes. That's backwards, IMHO. Hate it.

So Browns GM is going to be a shill? Or is the HC going to be GM, too? Sounds like the Browns are about to give someone some autonomy.

I would not be surprised to see Lovie Smith be picked up by Arizona, especially with that young defense.

It sounds kind of like the Philadelphia model under Reid, no? And considering Banner was there the whole time, basically, that should probably surprise approximately no one.

I agree. Clark Hunt saying the football operation "is under review and there may be additional changes to come" is a beat weasely. How much tie does he need?

I like Jax and Jets cutting their GMs. The coaches may follow because new hires like their own men. But clearly the problem with each franchise is a lack of talent and that isn't the doing of the football coaches.

Interesting that Woody Johnson praised Rex Ryan. He didn't have to. I like Ryan, he's not the problem, But Johnson's words make life a wee bit harder for the next GM.

Whisenhunt and Reid will help somebody.

Didn't Reid evolve into that role? And didn't that evolution lead to his being fired? Very, very few head coaches are also good GMs.

Bill Walsh, in the last 30 years. Who else? (Please, I hope nobody names Bill Parcells. )

What a bloody day. I can't remember one so big. Rivera is still up in the air until a GM is named.

As to your first question, I don't know. It's pretty clear to me that both the coach and the GM (and they do plan on hiring one) will answer to Banner, who is indisputably in charge. They did not say the coach would have final say on personnel. They said they want to hire a head coach first because they believe he will have a bigger impact, or something along those lines. This leads to me to believe, first, that they believe the Browns' problem this season lies in leadership and not in talent. The coach may have a larger role in personnel decisions than convention suggests, but the real problem would be if the coach picks the GM, in my opinion. I don't think that is the case.

Yes, the number of coaches who are good general managers is limited. You mentioned Walsh; there's Belichick, too, a few others I suspect if I thought about it long enough. We'll have to see what role the coach has in talent evaluation before we say much more, but there are a lot of different models in the league. Carroll seems to have a very active role in talent evaluation in Seattle; I wonder how much of a role Payton plays in New Orleans.

Personally, I'm sad to see Heckert go and I'm not crazy about the change there. Shrug.
