  • Of Note (AFC-NFC Divisional Playoffs)

Every Tuesday, we’ll recap the previous week with a few things of note. Sometimes the obvious is the most interesting, while we’ll try and mix in a surprise or two along the way…

After scoring points proved to be at a premium during the Wild Card Playoffs, every team got into the act in the Divisional Round. One week after each of the 8 teams failed to score more than 24 points, all 8 clubs scored at least 28 points. All 4 games totaled at least 58 points and there was a record total of 276 points scored in the 4 games over the weekend…

Talk about settling an old score. The Green Bay Packers’ season began with a home loss to the 49ers (30-22) and ended with a loss at San Francisco (45-31) in the Divisional Playoffs as the Niners won the two games by a combined 75-53 score. Including playoffs, the 49ers had lost 8 straight and 13 of their last 14 meetings with the Packers dating back to the 1995 NFC Divisional Playoffs…

Back to the Packers, who will be more than happy not to see 49ers’ QB Colin Kaepernick until next season when the clubs’ clash in 2013. In fact, Mike McCarthy’s team may want to spend the offseason getting a grasp of opposing quarterbacks, who had a field day against Green Bay in the postseason and not necessarily with their arms. In the postseason split with the Vikings and 49ers, the Pack allowed a combined 490 yards rushing; 241 yards to running backs and an astounding 249 to quarterbacks…

For the second straight year and the third time in five years, the Ravens are in the AFC Championship Game. And you can credit the play of QB Joe Flacco, who has been a much bigger factor in the postseason lately then he was in his early years. The former first-round pick has now thrown 12 touchdown passes and just 2 interceptions in his last 6 playoff games dating back to 2010. Flacco threw for only 1 score and was picked off 6 times in his first 5 playoff games from 2008-09…

Did the Falcons wipe out some recent old debts with Sunday’s 30-28 victory over the Seahawks in the Divisional Playoffs? In winning the first postseason game (in 4 tries) of the Mike Smith/Matt Ryan Era, Atlanta rolled up 419 yards of total offense, quite a difference from their ’08 loss to the Cardinals (250), ’10 loss to the Packers (194) and ’11 loss to the Giants (247). After rushing for a total of 169 yards in those 3 previous playoff games, the Falcons rolled up 167 yards on the ground. And while Ryan threw a pair of interceptions, he also totaled 3 scores through the air, as many as he managed in his 3 playoff losses…

My favorite has to be the stat on yards given up by the Packers on the ground.

A couple time times towards the end of the season Michael Turner flashed some of his old form. Then he did it again against the Seahawks.

He can't do it for an entire game, but I think he has enough left to get a nice rush or two and make SF respect the run. He's really been helped (kept fresh) over the long season by Atlanta's focus on passing and Rodgers' steady improvement.

Watching the Falcons try to choke away the game only to be foiled by the Seahawks' counter-choke was pure comedy.

Talking to a buddy of mine tonight who's a Carolina fan. He hates John Fox. Denver-Baltimore is why. Wrong instincts in critical moments. Probably fair to say Mike Smith and John Fox think alike. I agree, it's a flaw.
