• Music and Football, Can we get a HOF

    I know everybody has been getting their 2 nominees in for Cris's exclusive HOF. But I want to have another one (don't cringe Andy). I love music and football, and when you put the two together ... it's invigorating, electric, heart pumping, awesome. The night before a game many teams run highlights of the previous weeks game (usually after a win) and they put music to the video. The video directors put portions of songs to the highlights and it makes for a good adrenalin rush and a way to get players (and coaches) geeked up for the game. We'll make it a top 10 HOF (sound familiar). There are no automatic songs enshrined. I'm not looking for your favorite song from your favorite band. I want a song to have meaning in regards to competition, football or sports. Meaning could be in the title, the chorus, the beat, or partial lyrics. "We are the Champions" is not allowed in (it's in a league all by itself). Songs laced with profanity are automatically out. I want your top 5 songs. I will get it started with a top 10 list.

    * Running Down a Dream - Tom Petty
    * Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen
    * You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC
    * Renegade - Styx
    * Burn it to the Ground - Nickelback
    * Its My Time - Fabolous
    * Can't be Touched - Roy Jones Jr
    * Eye of the Tiger - Survivor
    * Just a Dream - Nelly
    * Kryptonite - 3 Doors Down

      In high school, every Saturday morning, 10 o'clock, I heard a VERY loud version of the only Steppenwolf song worth hearing twice, Born to be Wild. It was, excellent.

      Later in life, I have discovered that if you are absolutely crushing your opponent, Nick Cave's Red Right Hand can be an interesting theme. Borders on deliciously evil in the right circumstance.

      I've got one for you Turk. Isley Brothers "Climbin Up The Ladder Parts 1 & 2"

      Here's part of the chorus, which I think captures the adversity of football:

      Climbin' up the ladder
      I keep pushin' and I'm bound to know
      Climbin' climbin' the ladder
      Though it be shakin'
      Ain't it up that I gotta go?

      Ron Isley belts out the chorus of this jammin' track while brother Ernie, one of the greatest guitarists alive, has one of his better extended solos. Check it out on Youtube.

      Give me Velvet Revolver's "Slither" just because of the adreline rush I get hearing that encredible beat & guitar work by Slash (some of his best in my opinion) and Led Zeppelin's "Trampeled Underfoot" for obvious reasons.

      Opening lyrics for my #1 song:

      You'll take my life but I'll take yours too
      You'll fire your musket but I'll run you through
      So when you're waiting for the next attack
      You'd better stand there's no turning back

      The bugle sounds as the charge begins
      But on this battlefield (we alaways) win()
      The smell of acrid smoke and horses breath
      As you plunge into a certain death

      All to a driving beat so badass that even the brothers on my HS team adopted this as our 'tunnel song'. I still get a jolt of adrenaline when I hear this one.

      1) The Trooper - Iron Maiden
      2) For Whom the Bell Tolls- Metallica
      3) Back in Black - AC/DC
      4) Raising Hell - Run D.M.C.
      5) No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn - Beastie Boys
      6) Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith
      7) Lose Yourself - Eminem
      8) Paradise City - Guns & Roses
      9) Nobody's Fault But Mine - Led Zeppelin
      10) Paranoid - Black Sabbath

      This thread should be deleted as it is misleading..it alludes to a discussion of music, but then I see Nickelback listed. If you want to discuss corporate promotional pap, then it should be made clear...

      I don't care for most stadium rock, my only addition would be Blitzkrieg Bop by the Ramones (you may know it as 'hey, ho, let's go').

      As long as we're on the subject, can someone tell me why 'Bang the Drum' by Todd Rungren (I don't wanna work, I just wanna bang on the drum all day) is played after ever touchdown in every single stadium?

      The Ramones! Anyone here remember the flick 'Rock & Roll High School'? That was the first movie I ever saw without commercials on cable.

      Jacked up - Crazy Train (Ozzy)

      Conceiving children - Shining Star (The Manhattans)

      Drinking by myself - Good Old Boys like me (Don Williams)

      Driving in my car and I crank it and drive way to fast when it comes on - Southbound (The Allman Brothers)

      And just because I can - Blues Man (Hank Williams Jr.)

      Also Andy, "Bang the drum" should cease to exist sooner rather than later.
