10) Tennessee Titans - This just in: Chris Johnson is good and Vince Young wins games. I said earlier that Miami should've beaten Buffalo by double digits, and that's relelvant here. Why? Because the best teams always should destroy bad teams. That's exactly what Tennessee did to Oakland, and it's possible that the AFC South is wide open this year. Again, we'll know more after we see them play Pittsburgh next week.
9) Indianapolis Colts - I was still trying to grasp how Peyton Manning can throw for 400+ yards and 3 TDs and the Colts still lose. Then I realized that they had no run support, and even less run defense. Not to mention the total ineptitude of the offensive line and how many times Mario Williams and friends were in the backfield and collapsing the pocket. These are serious question marks that need to be addressed, and until they are I think it's ok to be nervous about this team. However, this is still Peyton Manning we're talking about, and as long as he has anything to say about it, the Colts are still contenders.
8) Minnesota Vikings - Might have cost themselves the game by abandoning the run game in the second half. In fact, Adrian Peterson didn't even touch the ball in the 4th quarter. That is not how the Vikings are going to win football games, but I doubt that Brad Childress understands that. He's just upset because nobody recognizes him without that creepy pedophile beard.
7) Pittsburgh Steelers - It pains me to put them this high, but if Dennis Dixon can lead this team to 2-2 or better, then they can go a long way. Their defense suffocated the Falcons all game, Troy Polamalu is truly so much of a difference maker on the field. The only thing that concerns me is that their running game was largely unimpressive. Take away that one run in OT by Mendenhall and his numbers were 21 carries for just 70 yards and no TDs. This offensive line can't afford many more injuries either, now that both starting tackles are out with Max Starks' injury.
6) Houston Texans - I wasn't a believer in the Texans until this past weekend, and then Arian Foster exploded,
leaving pieces of Colts' LBs all over the Houston metropolitan area and causing fantasy owners that had him on the bench to break down and cry. The big thing here is that the Texans won throwing the ball just 17 times. This team is one-dimensional no more, and could very well be the year they make the Playoffs. A lot of people had them doing that, but I'm not sure how many had them as potentially winning the AFC South...I'm just throwing it out there.
5) New York Giants - Made plays on both sides of the ball to close out a frisky Panthers team, and got some retribution for that shellacking put on them at the end of last year. Manning-to-Nicks could be a key hookup this season, and it's going to have to be if the running game continues to struggle.
4) Baltimore Ravens - Played nasty defense against the already offensively-challenged Jets, and somehow managed to eke out a win despite several unforced turnovers. The offense has a lot of potential, but looked in disarray at points during this game. There is plenty to work on for sure, but this is a well-coached team and sure overcome those problems.
3) Green Bay Packers - Started off slow but the offense and defense both stepped up as the game went on and managed to close out the game against the Eagles. Clay Matthews looked All-World at times, and Aaron Rodgers made the plays we all expected him to make. They take a huge blow though with the loss of Ryan Grant for the season, and it will be interesting to see if Brandon Jackson can finally breakthrough in his career and help keep this explosive offense on track.
2) New England Patriots - Tom Brady looked like Tom Brady, leading a wave of mutilation against the Bengals. The defense did a nice job of putting some critics at ease, as they got pressure on Carson Palmer and effectively stuffed Cedric Benson and the running game. It was an all-around domination of sorts by New England, and not even a Randy Moss contract dispute could stop this team...well, probably not anyway.
1) New Orleans Saints - The only team that could possibly outdo the Patriots this week, the Saints proved that they were not just a one hit wonder last year as they did a good job of handling the Vikings. The Saints are the champions until proven otherwise, and everyone else better take notice. The Saints are here to stay.
