How to handle it when I will be going for it on fourth down.

There are two fronts to the psychological battle, each geared toward the offense being calm and the players expecting success.

First, there will be open and frank discussion of the fact that we WILL go for it on fourth down in more than dire circumstances. This is from April through February. We are not going to discuss this outside the team, and that will also be mentioned. The players are going to train and practice in an environment of confident audacity. For example, Between the other team'so 35-45 or so, anything less than 4th and 6 will, except in specific clock-management situations and the occasional ebb and flow feel of the game situation, and we are going for it. During game yesterday week leading up to the game, I will single out a few players I expect to be in a position to convert on fourth down that I expect them to do so, and am looking forward to seeing them do it, whether receivers, blockers, or runners. In the game, the QB will be reminded during a time out situation that 3rd and whatever isn't the last chance to get a first down. I want the QB to be as loose and free as possible, and I expect the other players to notice it and respond accordingly.

New England, in the ABC Championship Game, blew some opportunities on third and fourth and goal, plus two point conversion attempt late in their comeback bid. At least three times Edelman was lined up and no Denver DB was within ten yards of lined up across from him. My players will train to spot that, and to quickly snap the ball and flick it out to him before a DB is even close. The Patriots normally do a great job of that, but really blew it there and then. I don't want to ever fail to take advantage of alignment failures by the other team. No need to be perfect when excellent will do.
