Thread: DreK is Back

I would like to rid ourselves of Jones because he epitomizes what is wrong with this team...falls apart emotionally when things matter most.

He's older, played worse last year, costs too much money for his production, and wears a bulls-eye on the back of his jersey. It would be nice to close that chapter of our history.

Or because you think the Bengals will get a better player for $6-7M a year in this free agency environment with the savings?

Or just a moral thing because you think he's a bad guy?

Not judging, just curious as to the reasoning

Lots of 1 and 3 for me. I thought he dropped off big time last year and he's a terrible leader. He blames everyone else for every big play given up. He's not needed on returns anymore. I also think he's a major a-hole, all talk of him being a changed person is bs.

I want Dre and WJIII/Dennard to start. The money saved could bring in some CB depth that might not have the upside of Pacman, but certainly wouldn't have the downside either.

For me, all of the above to an extent.

He did not play well enough to warrant the $$ last year in my opinion. I think he is a liability to the team in the mental side of the game. Not talking about X's & O's, but about the psyche. When someone blows a coverage and he throws one of his little temper trantrums, or when he screams at a ref, or whatever other crap is bad enough... but when he acts like the kind of a-hole he acted like in his latest off-field highlight reel... It's time to walk away.

I don't think he's a great guy, but as a player, I thought he regressed last year. He was very good in 2015. Last year, save for a few games, I thought he got beaten quite a bit, and by some average to good WRs. And as a PR, I thought he made some really poor decisions.

Maybe having a "new" DB coach was part of it. And/or having a new set of safeties back there. He just wasn't as good, and you wonder if at his age, he will continue to decline.

And yeah, I don't trust him at critical times in close games... I just don't think he's a smart player, and I don't trust him not to take a dumb penalty or exercise poor judgment at the worst time.

As upset as I am about their horrible mismanagement of the offense, if we ended up going into next season without Pacman, Rey M, and Domata Peko on the roster I might consider it a net gain. Throw Whit into the mix and we've instantly jettisoned 4 "leaders" whose claim to the mantel was always suspect. New leadership, actual leadership, will naturally and necessarily fill the void, and we may finally be on the way to ridding ourselves of being true losers.

Big money for Kirkpatrick to return - heard #Bengals started at $45 a week or so ago. Around $10.5 APY. Clearly team sees him ascending.

Dre Kirkpatrick will be getting close to $52.5M over five years for #Bengals via @JimOwczarski

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I was adamant about NOT wanting him back before they gave him a new contract. In fact, not wanting him back last year was the primary reasons I argued so loudly in favor of another 1st round CB.

I can't honestly say his crappy character had nothing to do with the way I felt, but mostly I made my decision based upon football stuff. I thought his play had slipped noticeably even before they gave him a new deal, and I think he slipped even more last year. Not to mention the fact that I've been openly imploring the Bengals to use some of the young QB depth they've acquired. What the hell were the waiting for? Plus, I think he's vastly overrated as a punt and kick returner so his ability to fill that role had no extra value for me.

Which brings me to Dre. Todays FA signing won't fix what the Bengals themselves just broke but I hate to think what the state of my Bengal fandom would be right now if Kirkpatrick had been allowed to leave.

  9. With this re-signing and PacMan we have 7 quality CBs on the roster now.

I'm firmly in the camp of cutting Jones as well.

    1. He's old. That makes him too old to depend on during a season, and way too old to be acting like a 22 year old jack wagon off the field.

    2. He isn't the player he was. Be it age or scheme shift, he wasn't awesome last year. Considering he's older now, and Coyle is still here, I don't see that trend changing.

    3. He's just a dirtbag. You are what you do when it counts. When it counts on the field, he's as likely to throw a tantrum as he is to make a stop. When it counts off the field, he's as likely to spit on someone as he is to break a phone, or punch a woman, or get a guy shot, or....

    4. He's a bad influence. Dre and Burfict were with him when he got thrown out of the casino. Burfict was bright enough to leave. Dre was under the influence enough to get separated from Jones, or this could have gotten out of hand for both of them...

    5. It's just time. He's a headache in every sense at a position we actually have some depth, in a draft with even more depth. I don't trust Jones to teach the young guys anything good anymore.
