When did center become one of the most important positions on the field?

Was it immediately after they offered Russell Bodine a new long term contract to stay?

No, it was after one of the worst centers in the NFL turned down their long term contract offer to stay.

The Bengals low performance standards at the position are well established. That they would have happily settled for the same in the future is not open for debate.

Drafting the 69th or 72nd best player at 21st overall in the 1st round doesn't mean you've avoided drafting a lesser player. It guarantees it.

As for busting? Knowing how low the Bengals set the bar at the center position how would any decent center prospect fail? 3rd rounder Mason Cole would have been given the starting center job as quickly as Billy Price.

why don't we let this dude prove his worth instead of saying he wasn't worth the 21st pick. Being the Remington Award winner, obviously he was more than not, graded at the best player at his position.

There may have been a couple people that didn't like something about him, but hey. I like his fire and the fact that even injured he's trying to get not just the mental reps in, he's kinda getting the physical reps.

And that criticism still seems valid knowing how the Cowboys used their very next pick to draft Gavin Escobar.

In the end the Cowboys got the starting center they wanted, but several years later their decision to pass on a better TE prospect has come back to haunt them. Witten has retired, Gavin Escobar is no longer on the team, and Zach Ertz is a pro bowl TE for the world champion Philadelphia Eagles.
It’s taken some time for Ertz to blossom but he’s turned out to be a very good player.

Actually, in 2013 draft in round 1, a lot of people around here throught if Shariff Floyd was available when they picked, Cowboys would/should take him. Turns out he was, but supposedly in the draft room a few D coaches got cold feet and said he wasn’t as good of a scheme fit... so they traded down to 31, where they took Frederick. Some wanted Ertz there, but their interior OL wasn’t great then, so Frederick made more sense, especially with TE Witten still playing at a high level. They’ve taken some TEs in later rounds after the Escobar fiasco but other than getting some solid blocking from recent pick Geoff Swaim and older hand James Hanna (who just retired injured), they’re still looking.

So TE was a need then, but I’d strongly argue not as much as interior OL (which they since sewed up nicely with Frederick, Martin and Leary - before he went via FA to Denver where he was their best OL last season). If the TV gig hadn’t opened up, Witten would still be playing.

With Witten retired the cupboard is bare. Meanwhile, Ertz is starring for the world Champion Eagles.

Cowboys can always point out how they got the center they wanted, and he's playing at the highest level. Meh.
