John Ross still struggling with the Bengals

Posted by Michael David Smith on September 14, 2018, 6:14 AM EDT

The good news for Bengals wide receiver John Ross is that he’s been more productive this year than he was as a rookie last year. The bad news is, that’s not saying much.

Ross, whom the Bengals selected with the ninth overall pick in last year’s draft, got four passes thrown his way but managed just one catch for eight yards in last night’s win over the Ravens. He also ran the ball once, losing three yards.

Last week Ross had one catch, a three-yard touchdown. So on the season he’s been targeted six times, caught two passes, gained 11 yards, and carried one time for negative-three yards.

That’s just not what the Bengals were hoping for from Ross, whom they chose in large part because he set the NFL Scouting Combine record with a 4.22-second 40-yard dash. A player with his speed should be breaking big plays, and Ross isn’t doing that.

Last year Ross didn’t catch a single pass, so you could argue that he’s making progress. But he still has a long way to go, and the Bengals, who are 2-0 without him, may decide that phasing him out of the offense is the way to go.

Bengals have scored 34 points in back to back games.

#1WR AJ Green just scored 3 TD's in barely more than a quarter of play.

#2 WR Tyler Boyd emerged as a true second option...with a TD of his own and 90+ yards. Best, the TD catch and run looked an awful lot like the play that bounced the Ravens the year before. So much for the storyline about the Ravens getting revenge, right?

Law firm of Eifert, Kroft, and Uzomah open for business. All contributing. Eifert smiling and having fun.

Joe Mixon, flashing and teasing. Almost there.

Yet somehow I wake this morning to random haters griping endlessly about whether the Bengals are..."trustworthy"

Or even worse, some stupid fantasy football rant about how the Bengals are using a backup WR.

    This is why I drink.

    Well, that, and it's fun.

    2-0

He's credited with one drop so far. He's trying to work on catching with his hands. Let him work through it.

Not everyone is a natural hands-catcher. It's something people knocked Marvin Jones for. Chad Johnson often cradled the ball also.

"Why isn't Ross getting more targets?"Not sure, but he's out here doing the dirty work to get others open.(Left side)

He's struggling mentally with his hands. It's been a theme through camp. Few drops. Now he looks uncomfortable. As for the offense, he's still lower on the totem pole for manufactured touches. He's the #3 WR in an offense that can't trust the OL & has passing options at TE & RB

He also cleared out the defense on a Boyd touchdown and on Mixon's longest run of the year.

    Replying to @PPLaRaul
"cleared out" doesn't have to mean everyone chased him, but he did run the post and the CB and Safety had to stay in position. Boyd crossed the defender and had a clear path to the end zone.

Green draws so much attention. Both safeties completely shaded to his side. Boyd (Yellow) takes advantage and gets a shot downfield.

Ross is purple and this is a way to get the slot guy deep. I know. I want it to be Ross also.

I think this is good perspective on John Ross. He's not getting his touches, but the Bengals are still using his speed as a threat to get other guys' theirs.

Aikman mentioned this during the game. Made me wonder who his source within the Bengals was. Said the Bengals are attempting to make Ross catch the ball with his hands before it gets into his body. Ross prefers to let the ball into his frame and trap the ball against his body.
