Bear Bryant/Bum Phillips Defensive Alignment Numbering System Odd vs. Even numbers

    Hi Turk,

Does an odd number in the "Bear" Bryant/Bum Phillips Alignment numbering system always mean a DL has a 1-gap assignment, and even numbers are 2-gap? Ex. 5 technique DE, and 20 technique LB

Any input from fans, and pros alike is welcome.

    Thanks,
    ebfz58

  2. I don't know their numbering system, but what you suggest would make it easy for the O-Line to figure out what the D-line is doing. Belichick uses a 2 gap scheme from 5 techniques all the time.

I was curious because that seems TOO easy. I know Belichick uses a 2-gap with the NT at 0, and his DEs at 5 and 3.And his ILBs are are at 20, while the OLBs are at 50, or 70 depending on the play. By your response, I take it even numbers are not always 2 gap assignments, and odds are not always 1 gap?

    Thanks.
