The Good, the Bad and the 49ers - Week 1

The 49ers win so ugly that it almost feels like losing. Watching them slowly choke away the game to Seattle only to be saved by Ginn's heroics left me feeling relieved instead of happy. The game had a little bit of everything.

    The Good…
    • Defensive line was stout against the run and applied consistent pressure on the quarterback. Tavaris Jackson was sacked 5 times and hit as he threw 4 times. Marshawn Lynch had one great run but other than that he was more Mouse than Beast.
    • No turnovers on offense - a game without an Alex Smith interception doesn't feel like real football.
    • No false starts from Anthony Davis!
    • David Akers deserves an Oscar for the world-class soccer flop that drew a roughing the kicker penalty. 4 of 4 on field goals ain't bad either.
    • Andy Lee had the third best punting day in NFL history. Maybe this should be in the 49ers section...
    • Ted Ginn Jr. Holy cow.

    The Bad…
    • The offensive line couldn’t open holes for the running game. Frank Gore averaged 2.7 YPC and was met at the line by a Seattle defender on every carry.
    • In the second half the 49ers offense evaporated. There wasn’t much offense to begin with.
    • Intermediate routes were consistently wide open because the corners were playing so deep.
    • If the referee who called unnecessary roughness on Madieu Williams had one more eye he’d be a Cyclops.

    And the 49ers
    • The play calling was atrocious. The ghost of Jimmy Raye must be haunting the offensive coordinator’s box. In the second half the Seattle defense crowded the line and Greg Roman kept calling runs up the gut and short passes. Apparently the coaching staff didn’t have time to draw up new playbooks so they’re reusing last year’s.
    • The 49ers were slowly choking the game away when Ted Ginn exploded. If you have to rely on Ted Ginn and his family to save your bacon you have a problem.
    • 1 for 12 on third downs is a pretty good definition of ugly.

A win is a win. Even a win as ugly as the 49ers.

Amen. I said that about the Megatron Catch, and we made the playoffs .

But yeah, some coaches need to understand that "running out the clock" shouldn't be taken so literrally.

And Harbaugh in particular should realize that "three yards and a cloud of dust" refers to a running game, not a passing attack.

Still though..... we won. I'll take as many of those as possible.

Perhaps you can improve two areas of the team at the same time and move Alex Smith to guard after his superior blocking performance last week.
