The Good, the Bad and the 49ers - Week 9

The 49ers went to the East Coast and won again. Good. The 49ers struggled against one of the worst teams in the NFL. Bad. The 49ers managed to eek out a win based on a trick play to a converted DE playing at fullback. Ugly.

    The Good
    • David Akers continues to be the premeire FA signing for the 49ers after going 4 of 4 on FGs.
    • Frank Gore had his 5th straight 100 yard game - a team record.
    • Defense collected 3 more turnovers

    The Bad
    • The offense wasn't just bad - it was horrible. Against one of the worst teams in the league the 49ers were 3-12 on 3rd down. The rushing game was adequate and the passing game was once again abysmal. The 49ers offense would have been great in 1960. In 2011 it's amazing they have a 7-1 record.
    • The defense allowed pass after pass to be caught by Roy Helu. At some point the linebackers should have thought it might be a good idea to cover him.
    • David Akers had to kick 4 field goals despite fantastic field position most of the day.
    • The fact that 17/24 for 200 yds and a TD equals a 109 QBR shows just how flawed that stat is.

    and the Ugly
Hey, a win is a win. The record doesn't reflect whether a team wins by 40 points or barely scrapes up a win against a horrible team. The 49ers have mastered winning ugly this year. This is the 3rd time the 49ers have won and it felt like a loss.

But at least you... Nope, I've got nothing. That shouldn't have been difficult.

The Washington defense isn't bad at all. They ahve a heck of a pass rush and solid linebacking play. They were ranked 9 in DVOA last week, before dropping 2 places after been faced with the mighty Alex Smith.

I do think you are starting to nitpick. There are no highlights when San Fran plays (except for TAINTS). That is some ugly football. But it is a winning formula.

I rewatched the game the other night and one thing that was really impressive was on the Niners first drive Alex Smith got POPPED...HARD. So hard that most QB's would have fumbled and he CERTAINLY would have in years past. Dude hung on. It's a small thing but it really impressed me as a sign of growth.

Also, as mentioned before, the Redskins defense isn't horrible. A road win is always a thing of beauty...regardless of who the victim is or how ugly it is eeked out.

This Sunday vs. the Giants should be a fun game to watch and some pretty major seeding implications for January. If the Niners can win this game....great googly moogly.
If the 49'ers success offends you...so be it.
    Namaste...*****es.
